The Renaissance of QR Codes

Quick Response (QR) codes are two-dimensional matrix barcodes capable of storing URLs, plain text, Wi-Fi authentication details, geographic coordinates, and vCard contact information. Native camera support in all modern iOS and Android smartphones has made QR codes an indispensable bridge between physical and digital touchpoints.

Best Practices for QR Code Design & Print

  • Maintain High Contrast: Ensure high contrast between foreground and background (dark codes on light backgrounds scan most reliably).
  • Respect the Quiet Zone: Always leave an unobstructed margin (the "quiet zone") of at least 4 modules around the outer border of the code.
  • Size Appropriately for Scanning Distance: The standard rule of thumb for print materials is a 10:1 ratio (distance to code : code size). For a viewing distance of 1 meter, the QR code should be at least 10 cm × 10 cm.
  • Test Before Printing: Always test scan generated QR codes under varied lighting conditions and across different mobile operating systems before mass printing.
