What Are Google Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are a set of specific real-world user experience metrics defined by Google to measure loading speed, visual stability, and interactive responsiveness:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Measures perceived loading speed. Marks the time when the main content of a page has likely loaded. Target: Under 2.5 seconds.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): Measures overall page responsiveness to user interactions (clicks, taps, key presses). Target: Under 200 milliseconds.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Measures visual stability and unexpected layout shifting during page load. Target: Under 0.1.
Top Optimization Techniques for High Performance
- Minify HTML, CSS, and JS: Strip comments and unnecessary whitespace to reduce byte transfer size.
- Eliminate Render-Blocking Resources: Load external JavaScript with
deferorasyncattributes so HTML rendering isn't blocked. - Preconnect to Critical CDNs: Use
<link rel="preconnect" href="...">for third-party font and CDN origins. - Set Explicit Width & Height on Images: Always provide dimension attributes on
<img>tags to eliminate CLS layout jumps.
